Scented Oils

Just like essential oils, scented oils emit wonderful aromas and have many diverse applications. The main difference lies in the scented oils' lack of purity compared to its essential oil counterpart.

When speaking of scented oils, one could potentially be referring to a number of different types of oil, including infused oils, aromatic oils and perfume oils. As one might imagine, carelessness can occur when making these distinctions, so these ‘tainted' oils are often lumped into one loose category: scented oils.

All of these subtle distinctions can muddle thinking in even the professional world. Many scented oil bottle labels claim to have therapeutic benefits, when in fact there are none. Only essential oils have therapeutic effects because they are completely natural.

Although they smell beautiful and are powerful at times, scented oils contain unnatural chemicals providing no particular benefit when inhaled. They typically consist of synthetic imitations of essential oils and smell like flowers, plants or fruits. It is helpful to be aware of these differences so you can find scented oil best suited for your needs. If fragrance is all you want, scented oils are an excellent choice.

Where can you find scented oils?

As the name implies, scented oils produce fragrance. Since the scent is the main feature (not its therapeutic value), scented oils are located in a variety of household products. The scented oils can either be found in individually-sold bottles or manufactured within products like the ones listed below:

  • Oil burners (the most common use for scented oils)
  • Candles
  • Potpourri (used to freshen)
  • Air fresheners
  • Lamp rings
  • Soaps
  • Lotions
  • Perfumes

Scented oils can mimic essential oils, such as chamomile, basil and jasmine, but are known for their almost infinitesimal array of artificial scents, including African rain, Indian summer, baby powder and amaretto. Since each scent has a unique appeal, it is important to choose a scent that is pleasing to you.

Different types of scented oils

Scented Oil: this produces a pleasant aroma, created by mixing essential oils, chemicals and fixed oils.

Infused Oil: this is a vegetable oil which has been infused with the scent of an aromatic plant by mixing the two together and then heating. The resulting oil has a delicate fragrance, but is very greasy and does not evaporate.

Aromatic Oil: this term also can indicate infused oil and sometimes is used synonymously with scented oil. This term sometimes incorrectly replaces the term perfume oil.

Perfume Oil: its aromatic ingredients create a perfume mixed with a non-greasy oil base.
