Essential Oil Diffusers

Diffusion is the process of dispersing an essential oil into the air, producing a certain aroma. Diffusion, although a rather bland name, is actually far from boring; it can infuse imagination and delight into the most routine parts of your life.

The reasons to use a diffuser are countless: you can place a lavender diffuser on your nightstand while you sleep, hang one in your car to keep you alert or turn on a calming aroma lamp during your meditation routine. Perhaps you just want your house to smell great. Whatever you are looking for, the vast quantity of diffusers makes finding the perfect one an easy task. Still, it may be daunting to keep up with all the differences between the numerous types of diffusers available.

While they perform the same overall function, diffusers have impressive variability with regard to the therapeutic benefits, convenience, appearance and scent distribution they provide.

Aroma Lamps (Candle Diffusers)

If you enjoy candles, you will love these diffusers. With an aroma lamp, you simply fill the bowl with warm water along with a few drops of essential oil. Then you light a tea candle positioned underneath the bowl to warm the water. The heat diffuses the essential oil into the air, spreading the scent. The aroma is light, however, and does not typically diffuse throughout an entire room. The heat may alter or destroy certain components of the oils and therefore the therapeutic benefit may not be as optimal as using cold-air diffusion methods.

An aroma lamp can be humble in appearance or can be decorative enough for your dining room table. It comes in ceramic, metal or glass. Its shape can range from conventional boxy to exotic glass figurines. Aroma lamps are convenient because they do not have to be plugged in like their electrical counterparts.

Electric Lantern Aroma Lamp

This diffuser is optimal for individuals who wish to avoid using candles. Perhaps you live in a college dormitory where candles are typically prohibited or you have kids, in which case the less risky electric lantern aroma lamp is the preferable diffuser. There is a tiny bulb inside the paper frame distributing a soft warm glow, while the warm water in the bowl diffuses your favorite essential oil or blend.

Nebulizers

A nebulizer is a device used for diffusing essential oil by breaking it down into separate molecules, then dispersing the smaller molecules into the air. Unlike an aroma lamp, this is an electrical device which is plugged into the wall. The nebulizer is said to be superior in therapeutic value because human lungs can more readily absorb these smaller molecules.

A nebulizer is comprised of a plastic base, which carries the motor, and a glass compartment dispersing the nebulized oil into the air. While a nebulizer holds top spot in terms of health benefits, the glass piece is easily breakable and expensive to replace. These types of diffusers can be difficult to clean up, especially with thicker oils.

Inhalers

Whether you need a quick energy boost or wish to relieve a headache, the inhaler can fit easily into your fast-paced life as well as your purse. Inhalers are much easier to carry than other, bulkier diffusers. Inhalers are handy, especially if you are in a place where you cannot use matches or there are no outlets. Just be sure to choose an essential oil known to work well through inhalation.

Fan Diffusers

Fan diffusers use a fan to blow essential oils into the air. With a fan diffuser, essential oils are usually placed onto a disposable absorbent pad or tray. It is then placed into the fan, which blows on the pad or tray, allowing the aroma to be dispersed throughout the room.

You can see great variability in the sizes and shapes of fan diffusers. Some are too small to aromatize an entire room, yet some are big enough to spread the aroma throughout an entire office.

Car Diffusers

There are several different types of diffusers designed for cars. One is a tube-like device, which can be plugged into a cigarette lighter or cell phone charger. It gently warms the essential oil. You can leave this plugged in indefinitely as long as the ignition turns off the cigarette lighter.

Another type of car diffuser is a hanging clay pot or jug, which you can hang on the rearview mirror. The essential oils will gradually and naturally disperse throughout the air. The hanging clay pot does not use electricity or batteries. If you have ever been stuck in traffic or have experienced any agitation on the road, you can see why either of these diffusers would be a pleasant addition to your car ride.

On the Trendier Side

Aromastone: this small diffuser has become immensely popular in recent years. Its lack of fragile glass or candle flame makes it one of the safest diffusers. By placing some warm water and a few drops of essential oil into the stone and plugging it into an outlet, you are on your way to a relaxing state. Another appealing aspect of the diffuser is its lack of aroma pads. Although the aromastone is electrically powered, it is quieter than both the nebulizers and the fan diffusers.

Cool Mist Aroma lamp: This no-heat diffuser produces a mist generated ultrasonically. This diffuser also can act as a humidifier as well as an aromatherapy device. Even if it is somehow tipped over and the liquid spills, there will be no scalding or burning, making it another child-safe and pet-friendly device.
